AI risk management in insurance
AI does not create new risks. It makes old risks faster, harder to see, and more expensive to fix. Insurance boards need to understand this before they approve anything.
Every insurance business manages risk. AI does not change that. What it changes is how fast decisions are made, how many are made at once, and how hard it is to trace why a particular decision was reached. That changes the risk profile.
This guide explains what AI changes about risk in insurance, what boards need to understand, and where the new dangers hide.
What AI changes about risk
AI does not create new categories of risk. It makes existing risks behave differently.
Speed. AI makes decisions in seconds that used to take days. A manual error affects one customer. An automated error can affect thousands before anyone notices.
Scale. AI can process thousands of policies at once. A mistake in the rules affects thousands of outcomes simultaneously. The cost of a single error is multiplied.
Opacity. AI decisions can be hard to explain. When a customer asks why their claim was declined, and the answer is the algorithm decided, that is not an explanation.
"21% of organisations have no AI governance at all, and governance and risk is the fastest growing barrier to adoption."
Source: Deloitte, State of AI in the EnterpriseGovernance is the fastest growing barrier because organisations are discovering, too late, that AI changes the risk profile in ways they did not anticipate.
The risks that matter in insurance
Not all AI risks are equal. The board needs to know the difference.
Pricing risk. AI can price policies unfairly if the data reflects historical biases. A regulator will notice. Claims risk. AI can settle claims wrong. A wrongful decline, a missed fraud signal, an overpayment. Each can be repeated across thousands of claims.
Compliance risk. If the system breaches insurance law, the business is liable. The fact that a machine made the decision is not a defence. Reputational risk. If AI makes a decision that feels unfair, the damage is to the relationship, not just the transaction.
"61% of CEOs say boards are rushing AI transformation, and around 40% of boards lack an informed view of how AI changes growth strategy."

How to manage AI risk
The approach is not different from managing any other risk. Understand it, measure it, monitor it, and have a plan for when it goes wrong.
Understand what decisions AI is making, what data it is using, and what happens when it is wrong. Measure the error rate, the impact of an error, and how often it happens. Monitor the system as the data, the business, and the regulations change.
Have a plan for when an AI decision is wrong. Who is notified, who is accountable, and how is it corrected? If the plan is we will figure it out, the risk is unmanaged.
The board's role
The board does not need to manage AI risk day to day. It needs to make sure someone is, and that the oversight is adequate.
Ask these questions. Who is the risk owner for each AI use? Not a team. A person. If the answer is no one, the risk is unowned.
What is the review cycle? AI risk is not a one-off assessment. It needs regular review, just like financial risk or operational risk.
What is the escalation path? When an AI decision goes wrong, what happens? If the answer is vague, the risk is unmanaged.
What Fuzzelogic does
Fuzzelogic works with regulated financial institutions, including nine across banking, insurance, and healthcare. We do not sell risk tools. We help boards understand what AI is doing in their business, what risks it creates, and how to govern them.
Our AI-ready framework gives boards a plain English way to assess any AI use against five tests. If it fails one, you know before it becomes a risk. If it passes all five, you know you can govern it.
You already have AI in your business. You just do not know where. We find it, classify it, and tell you what to do about it.
Start with the assessment. Two to four weeks, fixed price, and you own the verdict and the roadmap whether or not we build any of it. When you are ready to talk AI, call Fuzzelogic Solutions and ask for Zak. www.FuzzelogicSolutions.com | info@FuzzelogicSolutions.com | +44 (0)1624 618950
