A software developer is the firm you bring in when your business needs to build, fix, or improve software and you do not have the right people inside to do it properly. What a software developer actually does

The job of a software developer is not to bring technology into your business. The first job is to give the board a clear picture. Where is the business today? What is ready? What is not? What happens if a system fails in each area? That picture needs to be in plain English, not in jargon.

Why Isle of Man businesses need local software developers

The questions to ask before you hire anyone

Before signing anything, ask the software developer these questions. The answers will tell you what you need to know.

First, will you tell us not to do something? If the answer is anything other than an immediate yes, walk away. A developer that only says yes is selling you something, not advising you.

Second, who owns the output? At Fuzzelogic you own the assessment and the roadmap whether or not we build any of it. That removes the conflict. If a developer ties its advice to its build fees, its advice is not independent.

Third, what is your track record in regulated environments? Software in an unregulated startup is a different proposition to software in a bank or a government department. Ask for specifics.

Fourth, what happens when something goes wrong? Not if, when. What is the process? Who answers the phone? Who fixes it?

The projects that survive are the ones where somebody asked the hard questions at the start.
