What AI automation does for a law firm

Document review and analysis. AI can review contracts, flag unusual clauses, extract key terms, and compare documents against a template — across hundreds of documents in the time it takes a junior solicitor to review ten. The senior solicitor reviews the flagged items, not every page.

Due diligence. AI can assemble due diligence packs, cross-reference entity data against sanctions lists, PEP databases and beneficial ownership registers, and produce a report highlighting what needs attention — rather than asking your team to check every source manually.

Case research. AI can search case law, extract relevant passages, and summarise the position — giving your team a starting point rather than a blank page. The lawyer still makes the legal argument. AI does the initial research.

Client intake and onboarding. AI can extract data from client documents, run conflict checks, populate your matter management system, and trigger the compliance checks — reducing the time from instruction to work beginning.

Billing and time recording. AI can suggest time entries from email and document activity, generate draft invoices, and flag unbilled work — reducing the admin burden on fee earners who would rather be billing than recording.

The regulatory angle

The JFSC published AI governance guidance in July 2026. Law firms advising regulated clients on AI governance need to demonstrate they understand it themselves. Using AI-assisted due diligence and document review is not just efficient — it is a credibility signal to the clients you advise.
